Everything you need to know about navigating the city successfully.

LA is built for cars, and having your own Tesla beats stitching together rideshares across a city this spread out. The 405, the 101, and the 10 are your main arteries; the 405 crawls from late afternoon into the evening, so route around it when you can and the city opens right up.

Street parking in Santa Monica and Venice gets competitive on weekends, so head for the public garages near the promenade and the beach lots early in the day. Downtown and Hollywood are garage territory too, and booking a spot ahead through a parking app takes the guesswork out of event nights.

Point the car up the Pacific Coast Highway and Malibu is an easy afternoon, about 60 miles round trip from the west side with ocean the whole way. Leave before mid morning on summer weekends, and the included 300 miles a day leaves plenty of room to keep going toward Zuma or El Matador.

Pasadena fills up fast on New Year's morning, and the streets around Colorado Boulevard close well before the first float rolls. Park a few blocks off the route or watch from the residential stretches east of Lake Avenue, where the crowds thin out.
The course runs from Dodger Stadium to the west side and closes streets across Hollywood and Beverly Hills until early afternoon. Check the route map the night before if you have somewhere to be, or plan your day around brunch until the roads reopen.
The Bowl runs shows most nights from June into September, and its stacked parking is famously slow to empty. Stash the car in Hollywood and walk up instead, and the drive home through the Cahuenga Pass feels effortless.
North America's biggest anime convention takes over the Convention Center over the July Fourth stretch, and the garages around LA Live fill by mid morning. Park a few blocks out and walk in with the crowd, or arrive before the doors open.
Santa Monica Boulevard closes for one of the biggest Halloween street parties in the country, so park in a garage on the edges early or route around the closure entirely.
Griffith Park glows through December with the zoo's light festival, and the main lot backs up right after sunset. Go on a weeknight or aim for the later entry windows, and pair it with a loop up to the Observatory for the skyline.
