Major Events & Activities in Chicago

Reasons to rent a car and explore throughout the year.

March: St. Patrick's Day River Dyeing

The Saturday morning the river turns green pulls enormous crowds to the Loop bridges. Park in a garage north of the river before 9 or come by mid afternoon when the parade crowd thins, and save your Loop driving for later in the day once the bridges clear.

Summer: Wrigleyville Game Days

Cubs home games swallow street parking for blocks around Wrigley Field. If you are headed to a game, book a neighborhood garage or park a mile out and walk with the crowd; if you are not, just route around Lakeview for a couple of hours.

August: Lollapalooza

Grant Park hosts one of the world's biggest music festivals, and downtown garages fill fast all four days. Park in the South Loop or West Loop and walk in, and the quiet ride home afterward is the best recovery from a loud day.

August: Air and Water Show

The largest free air show in the country takes over the lakefront at North Avenue Beach. Drive up early and park in Lincoln Park, then walk to the water; Lake Shore Drive slows to a crawl once the jets start.

October: Chicago Marathon

One of the World Marathon Majors closes streets through the Loop and a dozen neighborhoods from early morning to mid afternoon. Check the course map the night before, or embrace it and cheer from a corner cafe until the roads reopen.

December: Christkindlmarket

Daley Plaza turns into a German holiday market from late November through Christmas Eve, and the garages nearby run holiday shopper full on weekends. Aim for a weeknight visit, and the drive back up Michigan Avenue under the lights is half the point.
